Cherax Quadricarinatus

Crustaceans

The Australian red claw crayfish, also called the Queensland red claw, is a species of freshwater crayfish named for the four ridges on its head, and adult males develop a distinctive red patch on the outer edge of their claws. It can grow up to 30 centimeters long and weigh as much as 600 grams. It is native to freshwater streams, billabongs and lakes in Australia's Northern Territory and northeastern Queensland and in Papua New Guinea, but human transport has spread it further within Australia and established invasive populations in South Africa, Mexico, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, Zambia, Malaysia and Singapore. It is farmed commercially in Queensland and the Northern Territory for its delicate crustacean flavor and is also kept in aquariums.
