Gentoo Penguin

Birds

The gentoo penguin is a medium to large penguin species found on subantarctic islands and the Antarctic Peninsula, identifiable by the bright orange-red bill and the white patch that stretches like a cap over the top of its head, connecting above the eyes. It is the fastest swimming penguin species, able to reach bursts of speed over 35 kilometres per hour underwater, using powerful flippers to pursue krill, fish and squid on dives that can exceed 100 metres in depth. Gentoo penguins breed in large colonies on ice-free ground, building nests from stones, grass and other available material, and both parents share incubation and chick-rearing duties, with pairs often reusing and defending the same nest site across years. Unlike some penguin species, its range has been expanding southward along the Antarctic Peninsula in recent decades, a shift some researchers link to regional warming and changing sea ice patterns opening new breeding grounds. Overall population trends vary by region, with some colonies growing while others decline, and the species as a whole is currently classified as near threatened.
