The brown trout is a carnivorous, ray-finned fish and the most widely distributed member of the salmonid genus Salmo, native to most of Europe, West Asia and parts of North Africa, and has been introduced so widely as a game fish that it has become one of the world's worst invasive species outside its native range. It has evolved three main ecotypes: a river-dwelling form, a lake-dwelling form, and an anadromous sea trout that migrates to the ocean as an adult and returns to fresh water only to spawn, all of which reproduce among gravel beds in cold, well-oxygenated headwaters.
