Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion

Arachnids

The giant desert hairy scorpion, Hadrurus arizonensis, is the largest scorpion species in North America, reaching 10 to 18 centimeters in length, with a tan to olive-green body, darker upper surfaces and yellowish pincers, legs and tail covered in sensory hairs that give the species its name. It is found across the Sonoran and Mojave deserts of western Arizona, southern California, southern Nevada and southwestern Utah, extending into Sonora and Baja California in Mexico, where it shelters by day in burrows, caves and rock crevices at elevations up to about 1,800 meters before emerging at night to forage.
