The interrupted fern, Claytosmunda claytoniana, formerly classified in the genus Osmunda, is the only living species in its genus, native to eastern Asia and eastern North America. Its common name comes from the distinctive way several pairs of small, dark, spore-bearing leaflets interrupt the otherwise sterile, leafy fronds partway up their length, a growth pattern unlike that of most other ferns.
