Home›Arthropod Relatives›All Arthropod RelativesBrowse ByAll Arthropod RelativesReference and ClassificationVerifiedThis subcategory groups arthropods that fall outside the atlas's existing insect, arachnid, crustacean, and mollusk subcategories: horseshoe crabs and sea spiders from the chelicerate lineage that also includes arachnids, and myriapods such as millipedes and centipedes, along with non-insect hexapods such as springtails. Horseshoe crabs are living fossils little changed in body plan for hundreds of millions of years, using book gills to breathe and blue, copper based blood to fight infection. Millipedes and centipedes both have many body segments each bearing legs, but centipedes are fast moving predators with a venomous first pair of legs while millipedes are slower detritus feeders with two leg pairs per segment. Springtails are tiny, widespread soil and leaf litter animals related to but distinct from true insects.FactsAll Arthropod RelativesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonReproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 1All Arthropod RelativesFilter Results11 entriesCommon GroupAllCentipedes and Millipedes (Myriapoda) (4)Horseshoe Crabs (Xiphosura) (5)TaxonomyAllArthropoda (4)Diplopoda (2)Limulidae (5)HabitatAllDesert (1)Estuary (1)Intertidal Zone (1)Lake (1)Marine (3)Seagrass Meadow (1)Conservation StatusAllData Deficient (2)Endangered (1)Not Evaluated (2)Vulnerable (1)EcosystemAllChihuahuan Desert (1)Sonoran Desert (1)Everyday GroupAllCentipedes and Millipedes (Myriapoda) (4)Horseshoe Crabs (Xiphosura) (5)DietAllCarnivore (5)Detritivore or Scavenger (1)Omnivore (3)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (1)Marine (7)Marine and Freshwater (1)Terrestrial (5)ThreatsAllBiological Resource Use (1)Relationship to PeopleAllAgricultural or Structural Pest (2)Eaten or Drunk by People (1)Hunted or Fished (2)Living or ExtinctAllYes (9)Where It LivesAllAfrica (1)Asia (4)Bangladesh (1)Denmark (2)Europe (1)Germany (1)India (1)Mexico (2)Myanmar (1)Netherlands (1)New Zealand (1)North America (3)Norway (2)Philippines (1)South America (1)Sri Lanka (1)Sweden (1)Taiwan (1)Thailand (1)United States (4)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 11Giant Desert CentipedeArthropod RelativesHorseshoe CrabArthropod RelativesIndo-Pacific Horseshoe CrabArthropod RelativesLimulus PolyphemusArthropod RelativesMangrove Horseshoe CrabArthropod RelativesMillipedeArthropod RelativesSea SpiderArthropod RelativesShocking Pink Dragon MillipedeArthropod RelativesSpringtailArthropod RelativesTri-spine Horseshoe CrabArthropod RelativesYellow-Spotted MillipedeArthropod RelativesSources1.
