Vibrio vulnificus

Vibrio vulnificus is a species of Gram-negative, motile, curved rod-shaped bacteria in the genus Vibrio, related to Vibrio cholerae, the cause of cholera. It lives in marine environments such as estuaries, brackish ponds, and coastal areas, and at least one strain is bioluminescent. Rising seasonal ocean temperatures and low-salinity marine environments favor its concentration in filter-feeding shellfish, and infections in the eastern United States increased eightfold between 1988 and 2018.
