Bacillus cereus

Bacillus cereus is a Gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium commonly found in soil, food, and marine sponges. Its species name, meaning waxy in Latin, refers to the appearance of its colonies when grown on blood agar. Some strains cause foodborne illness through spore formation, while other strains are beneficial as animal probiotics or form mutualistic relationships with certain plants; the bacterium can be aerobic or facultatively anaerobic and, like other Bacillus species, produces protective endospores.
