The river tern, or Indian river tern, is a bird in the family Laridae and the largest species currently placed in the genus Sterna. It is a resident breeder along inland rivers from Pakistan through the Indian subcontinent to Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia, where it remains uncommon. Unlike most terns in its genus it is found almost exclusively on freshwater, rarely venturing even to tidal creeks. The species is assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.
