Grasses And Sedges (Poales)

This group gathers Flowering Plants subcategory members belonging to the order Poales, a monocot order defined by small, wind-pollinated flowers reduced to bracts and scales rather than showy petals, dominated numerically by the true grasses of the family Poaceae. It spans the cereal grasses that supply most of humanity's calories, wheat, rice, maize, rye and sorghum among them, the towering woody grasses called bamboos, the sugar-storing sugarcane, and the sedges of the family Cyperaceae and rushes of the family Juncaceae, superficially grass-like plants of wet ground distinguished by triangular or round, unjointed stems rather than the grasses' own hollow, jointed ones. It also includes the bromeliads, a mostly epiphytic New World family related to the grasses despite their showy, often spiny-leaved rosette form, spanning everything from the pineapple to countless ornamental air plants.
