Glaucous Gull

The glaucous gull is a large gull, the second-largest in the world. Its genus name Larus derives from a Latin word that appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird, while its specific name hyperboreus is Latin for northern, drawn from the Ancient Greek Hyperboreoi, a people of the far north; glaucous comes from the Latin glaucus and denotes the bird's grey coloring.
