Other Crustaceans

This group gathers Crustaceans subcategory members that are genuine crustaceans but that this atlas's own sourced descriptions do not identify with one of the eight more specific crustacean groups gathered separately above. It spans several small, distinct and relatively little-known crustacean classes and orders: the fish lice of the class Branchiura, flattened external parasites that attach to the skin and gills of fish with a pair of sucker-like discs, the tanaids of the order Tanaidacea, a minor group of roughly nine hundred described species, Mystacocarida, a monotypic order of tiny crustaceans living in the spaces between grains of marine sediment, and the remipedes of the class Remipedia, blind, worm-like cave-dwelling crustaceans discovered only in 1981 and found nowhere but flooded cave systems connected to the sea. Every member gathered here is a genuine crustacean by the broad definition of the subphylum Crustacea; the split above exists only to keep eight especially large or well-known groups browsable on their own rather than to draw a biological line excluding anything placed here.
