Bushwren

The bushwren, or bush wren, also called matuhituhi in the Maori language, was an extinct species of small, nearly flightless bird endemic to New Zealand. It had three subspecies, one on each of New Zealand's main islands, the North Island, South Island and Stewart Island together with nearby smaller islands. The species declined steadily after invasive mammalian predators were introduced, and was last seen on the North Island in 1955 and the South Island in 1968. Efforts to save the remaining population on small islands off Stewart Island ultimately failed, and the last known birds died in 1972.
