Eurasian chaffinch

The Eurasian chaffinch, Fringilla coelebs, is a small finch of the family Fringillidae, breeding across much of Europe and temperate Asia as far east as the Angara River and Lake Baikal in Siberia and introduced to New Zealand, where it is now widespread. It measures about 14.5 centimeters long with a wingspan of 24.5 to 28.5 centimeters; males show a blue-grey cap and rust-red underparts while females are considerably duller, and both sexes have two contrasting white wing bars and white sides to the tail. The species is partially migratory, and males are strong songbirds that sing from exposed perches during the breeding season, with clutches of 4 to 5 variably colored eggs and young fed mainly on invertebrates, especially caterpillars. It has an extensive range of about 7 million square kilometers and a global population estimated between 530 million and 1.4 billion, is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, and the oldest recorded individual lived over 15 years.
