Mourning Collared Dove

The mourning collared dove is a medium-sized dove, 28 to 30 centimeters long, that is a widespread resident breeding bird across sub-Saharan Africa, from Mauritania and Senegal east through Chad, Sudan and Ethiopia and south to Angola, Zambia, Malawi and Kenya, with six recognized subspecies. It has a pale grey head and pinkish grey body, a broad black half collar finely edged in white on the back and sides of the neck, pale brown wings with darker flight feathers, and red legs and eye patches. It is common near water and builds a stick nest in a low tree branch or bush, often a mangrove. The IUCN lists it as Least Concern.
