Spotted dove

The spotted dove, scientific name Spilopelia chinensis, is a small, somewhat long-tailed pigeon in the family Columbidae, first described by Giovanni Antonio Scopoli in 1786. It is a common resident breeding bird across the Indian subcontinent and East and Southeast Asia, and has since been introduced to many other regions, including Hawaii, southern California, Australia and New Zealand, where it has established feral populations. Measuring roughly 28 to 32 centimeters long, it shows long-tailed buff-brown plumage with white-tipped tail feathers, light buff spots on the wing coverts, and its most distinctive feature, a white-spotted black collar patch on the back and sides of the neck. In its native range it is found in light forests, gardens, woodland, scrub, farmland and urban areas, foraging mainly on the ground.
