Salmon And Trout (Salmoniformes)

This group gathers Fish subcategory members belonging to the order Salmoniformes, cold-water fish of the Northern Hemisphere best known for the anadromous life cycle several of its members follow, hatching in fresh water, migrating to the ocean to grow, and returning to their natal river to spawn, often after swimming great distances upstream. It spans the Pacific and Atlantic salmon species, the rainbow, brown and other trout, which may spend their entire life in fresh water or, in some populations, migrate like their salmon relatives, the grayling, recognized by its unusually tall, sail-like dorsal fin, and the whitefish and cisco, less colorful relatives found in cold lakes across the Northern Hemisphere. Many members of this group are also prized food and game fish, with entire regional fisheries and angling traditions built around them.
