True Toads (Bufonidae)

This group gathers Amphibians subcategory members belonging to the family Bufonidae, the true toads, a large, nearly worldwide family of frogs distinguished by short legs suited to walking and hopping rather than long-distance leaping, thick, warty, relatively dry skin compared to most frogs, and a pair of prominent parotoid glands behind the eyes that secrete a toxic substance as a defense against predators. It spans the common toad and American toad, both familiar garden and woodland species across their respective continents, the cane toad, native to Central and South America but notorious as one of the world's most damaging invasive species after its deliberate introduction to Australia and other regions for pest control, and a range of smaller, regionally specialized toads. Nearly every species gathered here breeds in strings of eggs laid in water, in contrast to the clustered egg masses typical of many other frog families, and most spend the greater part of their adult lives on land, returning to water chiefly to breed.
