Great spotted woodpecker

The great spotted woodpecker, Dendrocopos major, is a medium-sized woodpecker of the family Picidae, ranging across Eurasia from Ireland to Japan and in North Africa from Morocco to Tunisia, in woodland from sea level to about 2,500 meters. It measures 20 to 24 centimeters long with a wingspan of 34 to 39 centimeters, has pied black-and-white plumage, a red patch on the lower belly, a slate-black bill, greenish-grey legs and deep red eyes, with males and young birds showing red on the neck or head that females lack. The species is mainly resident year-round but migrates when food is scarce in the north, has naturally recolonized Ireland with breeding first confirmed there in 2007, and drums rapidly at around 10 to 16 strikes per second to advertise territory, feeding on beetle larvae, seeds and nuts and occasionally raiding the nests of other cavity-nesting birds. Its estimated population is 73.7 to 110.3 million across a breeding range of 57.8 million square kilometers, and it is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN.
