The common snipe, Gallinago gallinago, is a wader in the sandpiper family Scolopacidae, native to the Old World, where it breeds in marshes, bogs, tundra, and wet meadows across the Palearctic from Iceland through Fennoscandia and Siberia, wintering in Africa and southern Asia. Adults measure 25 to 27 centimeters long with a wingspan of 44 to 47 centimeters and have a very long straight dark bill along with mottled, striped brown plumage that makes the bird shy and well camouflaged. It forages in soft mud mainly for insects and earthworms along with some plant material, and males perform an aerial courtship display that produces a distinctive drumming sound through vibrating tail feathers. It is listed as Least Concern, though populations on the southern edge of its European breeding range are declining because of agricultural change.
