All Algal Classes

Algal classes fall into several unrelated lineages, because algae are not a single natural group. Photosynthetic chromists, such as the diatoms and brown algae, were long classified as plants but are an independent evolutionary line that diverged from the same common ancestor as plants, fungi and animals, and they have chlorophyll c, which no plant group has. The green algae should not be a formal taxonomic group, since they are paraphyletic with respect to the plants, and one group, the charophytes, is more closely related to plants than to the other green algae. Green algae share chlorophylls a and b with plants.
