Gymnosperm Classes

Gymnosperm classes are the four classes that GBIF files under the vascular plants for the gymnosperms, Pinopsida, Cycadopsida, Ginkgoopsida and Gnetopsida, of which Pinopsida is much the largest with about 4,276 descendant taxa against about 1,622 for Cycadopsida, 604 for Ginkgoopsida and 369 for Gnetopsida. The Pinopsida hold the conifers, which the Tree of Life also lists under the names Coniferales and gymnosperms, with the order Pinales alone carrying about 3,573 descendant taxa. The Gnetopsida hold three orders, Gnetales, Ephedrales and Welwitschiales.

Ginkgoopsida is a proposed class of gymnosperms defined by Sergei V. Meyen in 1984 to encompass Ginkgoales (which contains the living Ginkgo) alongside a number of extinct seed plant groups, which he considered to be closely related based on similarities of morphology of pollen, seeds, cuticles, short shoots and
