The cedar of Lebanon is a large conifer in the pine family, native to mountains in Lebanon, Syria and Turkey, with a related variety in Cyprus, growing on well-drained rocky slopes at elevations of 1,300 to 3,000 meters. It can reach 40 meters tall with a trunk up to 2.5 meters across and is known for its longevity, height and durable wood. It appears in the ancient Epic of Gilgamesh, was used by the Phoenicians for shipbuilding and traded across the ancient Mediterranean, and remains the national emblem of Lebanon, appearing on its flag and coat of arms and as a symbol of the country 2005 Cedar Revolution. Extensive deforestation has reduced its original forests to small remnants, and it is currently rated vulnerable, though reforestation efforts continue in Turkey and Lebanon.
