Like the yews, most podocarps bear their seed on a fleshy, often colorful receptacle rather than in a woody cone, an adaptation that in several species encourages birds to disperse the seed by eating the fruit-like structure. It spans New Zealand's own totara, rimu and kahikatea, each a major component of that country's native forest, the African yellowwoods of the genus Afrocarpus and Podocarpus, and the Tasmanian Huon pine, called pine despite belonging here rather than to the true pines, prized for a durable, insect-resistant timber and among the slowest-growing and longest-lived trees in the world.FactsAll Podocarps (Podocarpaceae)SourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedSeed-Bearing 2All Podocarps (Podocarpaceae)Filter Results7 entriesCommon GroupAllPodocarps (Podocarpaceae) (7)TaxonomyAllPinopsida (1)Plantae (6)HabitatAllFreshwater Swamp Forest (1)Temperate Forest (4)Temperate Rainforest (1)Conservation StatusAllLeast Concern (5)Near Threatened (1)EcosystemAllValdivian Temperate Rainforest (1)Everyday GroupAllPodocarps (Podocarpaceae) (7)DietAllParasitic (1)Photosynthetic Autotroph (6)System (Realm)AllTerrestrial (7)Relationship to PeopleAllSource of Dye (1)Source of Timber or Wood (2)Used in Traditional Medicine (4)Living or ExtinctAllYes (7)Where It LivesAllArgentina (1)Australia (3)Australia (1)Brazil (1)Chile (1)Democratic Republic of the Congo (1)Eswatini (1)Japan (1)Lesotho (1)Mexico (1)Myanmar (1)New Zealand (1)North America (1)Portugal (1)South America (1)South Asia (1)Taiwan (1)United States (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 7African YellowwoodConifers and Other GymnospermsBuddhist PineConifers and Other GymnospermsHuon PineConifers and Other GymnospermsKahikateaConifers and Other GymnospermsRimuConifers and Other GymnospermsSaxegothaeaConifers and Other GymnospermsTotaraConifers and Other GymnospermsSources1.
