Common Apple-moss

Common apple-moss, Bartramia pomiformis, is a moss of the family Bartramiaceae with narrow, toothed leaves that curl inward when dry and spread outward when moist, and distinctive spherical, slightly lopsided capsules, green at first and turning ridged and brownish with age, that resemble tiny apples on thin stalks. It grows on acidic or neutral rock ledges, walls and earth banks in humid, shaded places, often close to streams and rivers.
