Home›Conifers and Other Gymnosperms›Everyday Group›CrabsGroupCrabsThis group gathers Crustaceans subcategory members belonging to the true crabs, decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura, recognizable by a short, broad, rounded body carried tucked beneath the shell and, in most species, a tail folded flat against the underside rather than extended behind the animal as in a lobster or shrimp. Crabs walk and swim sideways more often than forward, a gait shaped by legs that hinge most freely in that direction, and use a pair of pincer-like claws, often unequal in size, for feeding, defense and, in male fiddler crabs, an oversized signaling display used to attract mates and warn off rivals. Found in oceans worldwide from the intertidal zone to the deep sea, and in freshwater and terrestrial habitats too, crabs range from tiny pea crabs living inside the shells of other animals to the Japanese spider crab, whose leg span can exceed three meters, the largest of any living arthropod.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonTaxonomic Rank OrderWell-attested5 1Reproductive ModeWell-attestedOviparous (Egg-Laying) 2Browse ByAll CrabsCrabs51 entriesCrabsFilter Results51 entriesCommon GroupAllCrabs (51)TaxonomyAllBranchiopoda (1)Coenobita (13)Coenobitidae (1)Decapoda (24)HabitatAllEstuary (3)Freshwater (1)Intertidal Zone (2)Marine (5)River (1)Salt Marsh (2)Seagrass Meadow (1)Wetlands (1)Conservation StatusAllNot Evaluated (1)Vulnerable (1)EcosystemAllChagos Archipelago (1)Svalbard (1)DietAllCarnivore (3)Detritivore or Scavenger (10)Filter Feeder (1)Omnivore (11)Parasitic (1)System (Realm)AllFreshwater (6)Marine (37)Terrestrial (15)Terrestrial and Marine (1)ThreatsAllInvasive and Other Problematic Species, Genes and Diseases (3)Relationship to PeopleAllFarmed or Commercially Raised (4)Hunted or Fished (10)Invasive or Introduced Species (5)Kept as Pets (8)Living or ExtinctAllYes (15)Where It LivesAllAntigua and Barbuda (2)Argentina (3)Australia (1)Australia (3)Austria (1)Bahamas (1)Barbados (2)Belgium (3)Brazil (3)Cabo Verde (1)Canada (5)China (1)Colombia (1)Cyprus (1)Denmark (3)Dominica (1)East Africa (1)Egypt (2)Eritrea (1)France (5)Germany (1)Greece (3)Haiti (2)Hungary (1)Indonesia (1)Ireland (4)Israel (2)Italy (3)Japan (7)Kenya (2)Madagascar (7)Malaysia (1)Maldives (2)Mauritania (1)Mauritius (2)Mexico (2)Morocco (1)Mozambique (3)Netherlands (4)New Zealand (1)North America (1)Norway (14)Panama (2)Portugal (2)Russia (2)Saint Kitts and Nevis (1)Seychelles (5)Singapore (1)South Africa (3)South America (1)South Asia (1)Spain (3)Sweden (5)Switzerland (1)Syria (1)Taiwan (2)Tanzania (5)Trinidad and Tobago (2)Turkey (1)United Kingdom (6)United States (7)Venezuela (2)West Africa (3)BrowseCompareSelect all 51Australian Land Hermit CrabCrustaceans1 linkBlue CrabCrustaceans2 linksBlue King CrabCrustaceans1 linkBlue Land Crab (Cardisoma guanhumi)Crustaceans1 linkBlue Swimmer CrabCrustaceans2 linksBlueberry Hermit CrabCrustaceansBox CrabCrustaceans1 linkCallinectes SapidusCrustaceans1 linkCancer PagurusCrustaceans2 linksCarcinus maenasCrustaceans1 linkCaribbean Hermit CrabCrustaceans1 linkChinese Mitten CrabCrustaceans2 linksChristmas Island Red CrabCrustaceans1 linkCoconut CrabCrustaceans2 linksCoenobita brevimanusCrustaceans1 linkCoenobita lilaCrustaceans1 linkCoenobita longitarsisCrustaceans1 linkCoenobita pseudorugosusCrustaceans1 linkCoenobita rubescensCrustaceans1 linkCoenobita rugosusCrustaceans1 linkCoenobita scaevolaCrustaceans1 linkCoenobita spinosusCrustaceans2 linksCoenobita violascensCrustaceans1 linkDecorator CrabCrustaceansDungeness CrabCrustaceans1 linkEcuadorian Hermit CrabCrustaceans1 linkEmerald CrabCrustaceans1 linkEmerita AnalogaCrustaceans2 linksEuropean Green CrabCrustaceans1 linkFiddler CrabCrustaceansFlorida Stone CrabCrustaceans2 linksGhost CrabCrustaceans1 linkGolden King CrabCrustaceans1 linkHermit CrabCrustaceans1 linkJapanese Spider CrabCrustaceans2 linksMole CrabCrustaceansMud CrabCrustaceans1 linkPagurus BernhardusCrustaceans3 linksPassionfruit Hermit CrabCrustaceansPea CrabCrustaceans1 linkPom-pom CrabCrustaceans2 linksPorcelain CrabCrustaceansRed King CrabCrustaceans1 linkSally Lightfoot CrabCrustaceans1 linkSnow CrabCrustaceans1 linkSpanner CrabCrustaceans1 linkStrawberry Hermit CrabCrustaceans1 linkTriops longicaudatusCrustaceans2 linksUca PugilatorCrustaceans2 linksVampire CrabCrustaceansVelvet Crab (Necora puber)CrustaceansSources1.
