The common gull (Larus canus) is a gull that breeds in cool temperate regions of the Palearctic from Iceland and Scotland east to Kamchatka in the Russian Far East. Most populations migrate south for winter, reaching the Mediterranean, Caspian and Asian seas, though northwest European populations are at least partly resident, and the species was formerly grouped with the short-billed gull under the collective name mew gull. It is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a stable population and no significant identified threats.
