Graphis scripta

Fungi

Graphis scripta is a crustose lichen in the family Graphidaceae, described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753, and forms a whitish-green to grey-green crust marked with elongated, script-like fruiting bodies called apothecia, 5 to 25 millimeters long and 1 to 2 millimeters wide, with black outer rims and narrow discs that stay exposed even when dry, an unusual trait within its genus; its spores are spindle-shaped and divided by several cross-walls. Molecular study has shown the species to be a complex of six to seven genetic lineages that do not line up neatly with traditional shape-based classification. It occurs across temperate Europe, Asia and North America and is assessed as secure by NatureServe.
