The marsh frog is the largest native frog species in Europe, found in permanent lakes, canals, and slow rivers across much of central and eastern Europe and extending into western Asia. It is typically green or brown with dark blotching and a pale stripe down the back, and is highly aquatic, rarely straying far from water except during dispersal. Males produce a loud, harsh, far-carrying call from choruses at the water's edge, audible over considerable distances and a familiar summer sound across much of its range. The species has also become established outside its native range through deliberate and accidental introductions, most notably forming large naturalized, and in places invasive, populations in parts of southern England since the twentieth century, where it competes with and sometimes preys on smaller native frog species.
