Mahi-mahi is a fast-growing, surface-dwelling fish found in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, with a laterally compressed body, a dorsal fin running nearly the full length of its back, and vivid gold, blue, and green coloring that fades to a muted yellow-gray after death. Males develop a distinctively blunt, protruding forehead as they mature, while females keep a rounded head. Rarely living beyond four or five years, it can swim as fast as 50 knots and preys voraciously on smaller pelagic fish, crustaceans, and squid. It is a major target of both commercial and recreational fisheries around the world.
