The southern torrent salamander is a small salamander restricted to cold, clear, fast flowing streams and seeps in old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest of the United States, family Rhyacotritonidae. It is highly sensitive to warming water and siltation, so its presence or absence in a stream is used by biologists as an indicator of forest and watershed health.
