The California nutmeg, Torreya californica, is a species of conifer endemic to California, found in the Pacific Coast Ranges and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada as a slow-growing tree of the forest understory. It is one of only two Torreya species native to North America, named for its nutmeg-like seeds despite being unrelated to the true nutmeg tree, and it is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
