The Fiji crested iguana (Brachylophus vitiensis) is native to a handful of dry forest islands in the northwestern Fiji archipelago, with its largest population on Yadua Taba, and was not formally described as a species until 1981. It is bright emerald green with narrow white bands and a tall crest of spines along its back, and grows to about 75 centimeters in length. It is mostly herbivorous, favoring hibiscus flowers along with other leaves and fruit, and lays eggs that take an unusually long time to incubate, sometimes close to nine months. Fewer than four thousand individuals are thought to remain, and the IUCN assesses it as Critically Endangered.
