The snapdragon is a flowering plant native to rocky areas of the Mediterranean, widely grown as a garden ornamental for its tall spikes of colorful, two-lipped flowers. The common name comes from the way each flower's hinged petals can be squeezed at the sides to open like a dragon's mouth, snapping shut again when released. Snapdragon flowers are pollinated mainly by bumblebees, which are strong enough to force the closed petals open to reach the nectar inside.
