The African clawed frog is a fully aquatic frog in the family Pipidae, named for the short black claws on its feet, and it has no tongue or teeth, feeding instead with its hands. It lacks external eardrums and hears through cartilaginous disks beneath its skin, and it is native to sub-Saharan Africa from Nigeria and Sudan south to South Africa, with introduced populations now living in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. In the 1930s it became the basis of the first widely used pregnancy test, since a pregnant woman's urine triggers egg-laying in the frog, and it remains an important model organism in developmental and molecular biology. It is rated least concern for conservation but is considered invasive in parts of Europe.
