Breadfruit, Artocarpus altilis, is a flowering tree in the mulberry and jackfruit family Moraceae, originally from the Pacific islands of Polynesia and believed to have been selectively bred from the breadnut native to New Guinea, the Maluku Islands and the Philippines. The tree can reach about 26 meters in height, with large, thickly lobed leaves, and every part of it yields a latex once used for caulking boats. It is one of the highest-yielding food plants, with a single tree producing up to 200 or more grapefruit-sized fruits in a season; the name comes from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit once cooked, said to resemble freshly baked bread with a potato-like flavor. Breadfruit is now grown widely through the tropics of South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific and Caribbean islands, Central America, northern South America and Africa.
