Salix integra

Flowering Plants

Salix integra is a species of willow native to northeastern China, Japan, Korea, and the far southeastern Russian region of Primorsky Krai. It is a deciduous shrub growing 2 to 6 meters tall, with greyish green bark and reddish to yellowish shoots, and leaves 2 to 10 centimeters long that are unusually arranged in opposite pairs or whorls of three rather than alternately, as in most willows. Small catkins 1 to 2.5 centimeters long, with brownish to reddish flowers, appear in early spring on separate male and female plants, since the species is dioecious. It is closely related to the European and western Asian willow Salix purpurea.
