The common coqui (Eleutherodactylus coqui) is a tree frog of the family Eleutherodactylidae native to Puerto Rico, Vieques, and Culebra. Males measure 30 to 37 millimeters snout to vent and females 36 to 52 millimeters, with muddy-brown, mottled coloring, rust-tan flanks, a light-gray belly, and sticky toe pads but no webbing between the toes. It lives from sea level to 1,200 meters in forests, mountains, and urban areas including human dwellings, reaching densities of about 20,000 individuals per hectare in its native range. Males give a two-part call, described as co-qui, in which the first syllable repels other males and establishes territory and the second attracts females; the call reaches up to 73 decibels. It can live up to 6 years in the wild, though most adults survive less than a year, and it is assessed as Least Concern; it is an important symbol of Puerto Rican culture.
