Living or extinct records whether a species still survives today. Wikipedia notes the wild giant panda population "had increased to 1,864 individuals" as of the most recent national survey, a species very much still alive even as it remains vulnerable. This dimension separates species a visitor could still see today from those known only from the fossil record.
