Managed or Multiple-Use Protection

Protected status records whether an ecosystem has any legal safeguard against damage. Wikipedia notes "a large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing and tourism," and the reef itself "was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981." This dimension separates ecosystems with formal protection from those with none.
