Fish Orders

The taxonomic orders of the ray-finned and other fishes, covering the bony-fish and cartilaginous-fish orders catalogued in this atlas under the standard ichthyological classification (Nelson's Fishes of the World, followed by ITIS, GBIF and the Catalogue of Life alike), from Perciformes, historically treated as the largest order of vertebrates, through Cypriniformes, Siluriformes, Salmoniformes and the rest. Like the bird orders, most fish order names carry the shared -iformes ending, so placement here is checked against each entity's own sourced description identifying it as a fish rather than a bird, never the ending alone. Excludes every -iformes order that is a bird, such as Galliformes or Charadriiformes, which belong in Bird Orders instead.
