Apistogramma hongsloi

Apistogramma hongsloi is a species of dwarf cichlid in the family Cichlidae, described in 1979 and named for Thorbjorn Hongslo, a Swedish aquarist and fish disease specialist. It comes from the Orinoco basin of South America, specifically the middle Orinoco River and the Vichada and middle Meta river drainages. Wild individuals are dark yellowish brown in the dry season, with males more brightly colored than females and both sexes developing a distinctive red spot at the base of the tail during the breeding season, though selectively bred aquarium strains are considerably more colorful than the wild form. The species is popular in the aquarium hobby and prefers soft, acidic water; wild caught fish are rarely traded because of their duller coloring, while captive bred color variants are widely available.
