Burmese bamboo shark

Fish

The Burmese bamboo shark, Chiloscyllium burmensis, is an extremely rare species of carpet shark in the family Hemiscylliidae, order Orectolobiformes. It is a small shark with a slender body, blunt snout and small eyes, an unpatterned dorsal fin with straight rear margins, and no distinctive color markings. The first specimen was collected in 1963 off Rangoon, Myanmar at depths of 29 to 33 meters, with additional specimens recorded in 2018 from Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. It is oviparous, notably laying its eggs in pairs, and feeds on small bony fish and invertebrates; the IUCN Red List classifies it as Vulnerable.
