A flatfish native to European waters from the Barents Sea south to the Iberian Peninsula and around Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Its upper side is dark green to brown and marked with conspicuous orange spots, while its underside is pearly white, and both eyes sit on the right side of its oval body. It can reach 70 centimeters and live up to twenty years, living on sandy and muddy seafloors at depths of 10 to 200 meters, with adults in deeper water and juveniles in shallow estuaries and sandy coasts. It feeds nocturnally, burrowing into sediment by day and taking polychaete worms, crustaceans and bivalves, with young fish relying heavily on shrimp.
