The blue shark is a slender, long-finned, deep-blue oceanic shark found nearly worldwide in temperate and tropical seas from the surface down to about 350 meters. Females grow larger than males, reaching over 3 meters, with occasional unverified reports of much bigger individuals. Highly migratory, it travels vast distances across ocean basins and shifts its depth through the day and night, hunting mainly squid along with cuttlefish, octopus, crustaceans, and other fish. It makes up the large majority of sharks caught incidentally as bycatch in oceanic fisheries, and is listed as Near Threatened.
