Pimelodus pohli

Pimelodus pohli is a catfish in the family Pimelodidae, order Siluriformes, described by Ribeiro and Lucena in 2006 and named for the Austrian naturalist Johann Baptist Emanuel Pohl, who collected specimens in the Sao Francisco basin in the nineteenth century. Young fish under about 10 centimeters have a grey body marked with four rows of small dark spots, while larger adults tend toward plain grey; the species has a deep body, a prominent eye, a protruding upper jaw, extremely long maxillary barbels that reach the forked tail fin when stretched, and a notably long adipose fin. It reaches a maximum standard length of about 15 centimeters and is found only in Brazil's Sao Francisco River and its tributaries, where it is assessed as Least Concern.
