Spreading Earth-moss is a moss species used as a model organism in scientific research on plant evolution, development and physiology, occupying a role for bryophyte biology similar to the one better known model plants fill for flowering plants. Its scientific classification has shifted in recent years from the genus Physcomitrella to Physcomitrium.
