The Phasmatodea are an order of insects whose members are variously known as stick insects, stick bugs, walkingsticks, stick animals or bug sticks. Their natural camouflage makes them difficult for predators to detect, though many species also have secondary defenses such as startle displays, spines or toxic secretions. They are found on all continents except Antarctica, most abundant in the tropics and subtropics, with the greatest diversity in Southeast Asia and South America.
