The green and black poison dart frog is native to humid lowland forests of Central America, from Nicaragua to Colombia, and has also become established outside its native range on the Hawaiian island of Oahu following an introduction intended for mosquito control. Its skin pattern is highly variable, combining metallic green, blue, or bronze with irregular black markings, and it is diurnal and active on the forest floor. It is less toxic than some related dart frogs, but its bold coloration still functions as a warning to predators. Males take an active parental role, carrying newly hatched tadpoles piggyback from the leaf-litter nest site to small pools of water, sometimes distributing siblings among several separate pools to reduce competition and predation risk.
