The green terror is a colorful freshwater fish in the cichlid family, native to the Pacific side of South America from the Tumbes River in Peru to the Esmeraldas River in Ecuador. It is polymorphic and can show white or gold orange edging on its tail and dorsal fins, and it has historically been confused with two related species that always show narrow, clearly defined white edging, the more southerly Andinoacara stalsbergi and the more northerly Andinoacara blombergi.
